Meaning and Astronomy

Xiaoman (小滿) begins when the sun reaches ecliptic longitude 60°, usually between 20 and 22 May. It is the eighth solar term, a zhongqi (中氣) or principal term in the fourth lunar month, and the second term of summer.

The name, literally 'small fullness', is read two ways. In the north it means the kernels of winter wheat and other summer crops are filling out but not yet ripe; in the south it is often taken to mean rivers and ponds filling with rain. Although the calendar pairs Minor Heat with Major Heat and Minor Cold with Major Cold, there is no 'major fullness', which later commentators interpreted as a lesson in contentment - being nearly full rather than overflowing.

The Three Pentads

  • First pentad: Sow thistle flourishes (苦菜秀) - this bitter wild green, long eaten in hard times, grows lush and flowers.
  • Second pentad: Delicate grasses wither (靡草死) - fine, shade-loving grasses die back under strong sun.
  • Third pentad: The wheat harvest approaches (麥秋至) - 'autumn' here means harvest time, and for wheat it is nearly here.

Climate and Farming

Rainfall surges in southern China; Guangdong people say 'at Xiaoman the rivers fill'. The lower Yangtze grows humid as the plum rains approach, Taiwan is at the peak of its plum rain season with frequent downpours, and Hong Kong sees regular rainstorms. Northern China is hot and fairly dry, and filling wheat is vulnerable to hot, dry winds.

Rice paddies need ample water; a southern proverb warns 'if Xiaoman is not full, the field ridges crack' (小滿不滿,乾斷田坎). In the north, 'Xiaoman, Xiaoman, the wheat grains slowly fill' describes fields nearing harvest. It is also a busy season for silkworms and silk reeling.

Customs

In the water towns of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, which once relied on treadle water wheels, farmers made offerings to the water-wheel spirit (祭車神) with fish, meat, incense and candles, praying for enough water. Around Haining in Zhejiang, villagers would start their wheels at the same moment to draw river water into the fields. Folk tradition also holds that Xiaoman is the birthday of the silkworm deity, and silk-raising villages held prayers for a good cocoon harvest.

Because food once ran short before the summer harvest, many people ate wild bitter greens, and eating them at Xiaoman remains a custom in many places. Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau have few rituals specific to this term; with heavy rain common, farmers focus on protecting crops from storms and disease.

Seasonal Food and Wellness

As weather turns hot and humid, traditional thinking favours light meals and ingredients regarded as cooling and dampness-clearing, such as winter melon, luffa, mung beans, Job's tears and bitter melon, with less fried, spicy or very sweet food. Good ventilation and adequate rest help with muggy days. These are traditional ideas, not medical advice.
