June: Grain in Ear, Summer Solstice and the Dragon Boat Festival
Grain in Ear falls around 5 or 6 June. The name refers to bearded grains such as wheat and rice: wheat is ready for harvest while later rice must be sown without delay. Summer Solstice, around 21 June, brings the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Northern China is busy with the wheat harvest in hot, dry weather, the middle and lower Yangtze usually enters its plum rain season in mid-June, and southern China and Hong Kong are hot and wet as the typhoon season gets under way. Taiwan's plum rains usually end in mid to late June, giving way to afternoon thunderstorms.
The Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu), on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, usually falls between late May and late June and is a holiday in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China. Customs include dragon boat races, rice dumplings, mugwort and calamus hung by the door and fragrant sachets; in Taiwan people also try to stand an egg on end and collect water at noon. The fifth lunar month was traditionally called the 'poisonous month', so customs focus on warding off illness. Around the 13th of that month, Taipei's Xiahai City God Temple holds its major procession.
Some older people avoid building or moving house in the fifth lunar month, though most simply consult the almanac. In northern China noodles are eaten at the solstice, echoing a saying that pairs dumplings for winter with noodles for summer. Mangoes and lychees are plentiful in Taiwan, where the first rice crop is harvested in the south.
