August: Start of Autumn, End of Heat and the seventh lunar month

Start of Autumn falls around 7 or 8 August, but most places stay hot, a late spell known as the 'autumn tiger'. End of Heat, around 22 or 23 August, signals that the worst of the heat is about to pass. In northern China mornings and evenings begin to cool, while the Yangtze region remains muggy. Southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan are still hot and humid, and this is the peak of the typhoon season, with heavy rain and strong winds.

The seventh lunar month, traditionally called Ghost Month, usually falls in August and September. The Qixi Festival on the seventh day usually lands in August and is now often treated as a Chinese Valentine's Day. The Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan) on the fifteenth usually falls between mid-August and early September. Communities across Taiwan hold pudu offerings for wandering spirits, with Keelung's Ghost Festival especially large, and Hong Kong's Yu Lan Festival of the Chiuchow community is listed as national intangible cultural heritage. 8 August is Father's Day in Taiwan, though not a day off.

By tradition few weddings are held in the seventh lunar month, and many people also avoid moving, buying property or breaking ground, so wedding venues enter their quiet season. Folk taboos such as avoiding late nights out or swimming are matters of belief rather than fact. In northern China people 'add autumn fat' by eating meat at Start of Autumn. After End of Heat, traditional advice is to add a layer in the cooler evenings.
