February: Start of Spring, Rain Water and the New Year season

Start of Spring falls around 3 to 5 February, most often on the 4th, and opens the cycle of twenty-four solar terms. Rain Water follows around 18 or 19 February, marking the shift from snow to rain. Northern China is still cold, with the odd spring snowfall. Southern China and Hong Kong begin to warm up but often experience 'returning south' weather, when humid air leaves walls and floors damp. Northern Taiwan is often grey and wet while the south stays drier.

Lunar New Year usually falls between late January and mid-February, bringing long holidays in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China along with the reunion dinner, New Year visits and the custom of married daughters visiting their parents on the second day. On the ninth day, temples and households in Taiwan honour the Jade Emperor. The Lantern Festival on the fifteenth usually lands between early February and early March, with lanterns, riddles and sweet rice balls; Taiwan adds the Pingxi sky lanterns and the Yanshui fireworks. Peace Memorial Day on 28 February is a Taiwanese public holiday.

In almanac tradition the new stem-branch year begins at Start of Spring, so zodiac animals and birth charts are usually counted from that day rather than from the first day of the lunar year. Many people visit temples in the New Year period to pay respects to the Tai Sui deity of the year or light blessing lamps. Spring rolls and spring pancakes are eaten to 'bite the spring', and New Year cakes carry wishes for rising fortune.
