September: White Dew, Autumn Equinox and the Mid-Autumn Festival
White Dew falls around 7 or 8 September, when cooler nights leave dew on the grass at dawn. Autumn Equinox, around 22 or 23 September, brings roughly equal day and night again. Northern China enjoys crisp, clear and increasingly dry weather, and summer heat fades along the Yangtze. Southern China and Hong Kong are still hot and the typhoon season is not over; Taiwan can also be hit by typhoons, and from late September the northeast monsoon starts to reach the north.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, usually falls between early September and early October. It is a holiday in Taiwan, Hong Kong and mainland China, although Hong Kong's public holiday is the day after the festival. Moon-gazing, mooncakes and pomelos are shared customs; barbecues have become a Taiwanese favourite, and Hong Kong has lantern carnivals and the Tai Hang fire dragon dance. 28 September is Confucius' birthday and Teachers' Day in Taiwan, marked by ceremonies at Confucian temples.
A folk saying advises against going bare-chested after White Dew because the mornings turn cool. Autumn is considered a dry season, so pears, snow fungus and lily bulbs are traditionally eaten to counter dryness, and parts of Fujian eat longan at White Dew. A farming proverb names the equinox as the right time to sow winter wheat in the north. Once Ghost Month ends, weddings and moves pick up again, and autumn and winter have long been the busiest wedding seasons.
