March: Awakening of Insects, Spring Equinox and spring planting

Awakening of Insects falls around 5 or 6 March; the old idea was that the first spring thunder roused creatures hibernating in the soil. Spring Equinox, around 20 or 21 March, is when day and night are roughly equal in length. Northern China warms up but stays dry and windy. Drizzle is common in the lower Yangtze, while southern China and Hong Kong turn humid and foggy. Taiwan sees frequent fronts and abrupt temperature swings, summed up in a Taiwanese saying that spring weather is as changeable as a stepmother's face.

The second day of the second lunar month usually falls between late February and late March. In northern China it is Dragon Raises Its Head (Longtaitou), when people get a haircut and eat spring pancakes; in Taiwan it is the birthday of the Earth God, and businesses hold their first ya offering of the year. On the day of Awakening of Insects, people in Taiwan and Hong Kong make offerings to the White Tiger, and 'villain hitting' under Hong Kong's Canal Road Flyover is well known. Guanyin's birthday on the nineteenth day of the second month falls between early March and early April. 12 March is Arbor Day in Taiwan and mainland China.

Planting is in full swing around the equinox: spring wheat goes in across the north and early rice seedlings are raised in the south. Tradition advises against shedding winter layers too soon, since mornings and evenings remain cool. With mild weather, many people schedule weddings, house moves or business openings now and check the almanac for suitable days.
