How the holidays work

Hong Kong’s general holidays, often called bank holidays, are set by the General Holidays Ordinance: 17 days a year. A holiday that falls on a Sunday moves to the next day.

Statutory holidays under the Employment Ordinance, sometimes called labour holidays, are fewer and are being increased in stages to match the general holidays, so the days an employee is actually entitled to depend on the law and the employment contract.

Holidays are calculated from current law and announced arrangements and are for reference only; the local government’s announcement is authoritative. Select a date to open it in the calendar.
